Mission Statement

Waste Not Want Not, Inc., a volunteer-based group, exists to prevent the discarding of food and other items that can be used to fight hunger and poverty in our community. We do this by rescuing food daily from numerous sources for distribution to local charitable organizations, and through other cost-effective, volunteer-driven initiatives.

Food Rescue: What? Why?

According to the US Department of Agriculture:
  • Almost one-quarter of America's food, 10 million tons of food worth $31 billion dollars, is thrown away unsold every year.
  • Over 36 million Americans, including 12.3 million children, suffer from hunger or live on the edge of hunger.
In Clary and Duval Counties, more than 20,000 poeple including 8,000 children, received emergency foold last year.
The Federal Government and the State of Florida encourage the donation, rescue, and distribution of sale-dated and excess foods.

The Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act

The Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act and the Florida Statutes (Chapter 768.136) provide protection from liability to those who act in good faith to donate, recover, and distribute excess food.

Waste Not Want Not: Who? Where? When? How?

Waste Not Want Not, Inc. founded in 1990, is a voluteer-based organization that prevents the discarding of food and other items that can be used to fight hunger and poverty in North Florida.  Our volunteers drive to local stores and businesses 362 days a year to collect excess food. These donations, which average 2,200 pounds a day, are brought to Wast Not's facility, consolidated, and made available to other charities that same day.

Last year, Waste Not Want Not's 160 volunteers rescued more than 750,000 pounds of food. This food was distributed to agencies fighting poverty, homelessness, illiteracy, and ill health in six counties, saving them $1,300,000. These savings allowed the groups to provide additional services to those in need in our community. Of the 100 charities that Wast Not currently helps, 70 are weekly recipients.

For each dollar Wast Not Want Not spent in 2009, we provided almost 22 pounds of nutritious food to hungry people. Wast Not has substantially reduced want in our community by efficiently reducing waste for 20 years thanks to the generosity of food donors, financial donors, and our volunteers. Wast Not, a tax-exempt corporation, always gratefully welcomes in-kind donations, financial contributions and new volunteers.
